Painful Urination Because of Herpes

Why Herpes Can Make Peeing Painful

Painful urination (dysuria) during a genital herpes outbreak occurs because:
  • Ulcers/sores near the urethra react to urine’s acidity
  • Inflammation irritates sensitive nerve endings
  • Secondary irritation from frequent wiping or soap exposure
Note: If pain persists after sores heal, see a doctor to rule out UTIs or other conditions.

Immediate Relief Methods

1. Hydration + Urine Dilution

  • Drink extra water – Diluted urine burns less
  • Avoid caffeine/alcohol – These dehydrate and increase urine acidity

2. Pain-Free Peeing Techniques

  • Pour warm water over genitals while urinating. Either use a peri bottle or cup or stand under the shower while water is pouring onto the area.
  • Lean forward when peeing – Redirects urine flow away from sores
  • Pat dry gently – No rubbing; use soft, unscented toilet paper

3. Sitz Baths with Epsom Salts

  • 2x daily for 15 mins in warm (not hot) water
  • Add 1/2 cup Epsom salts – Reduces inflammation and promotes healing
  • Air dry afterward – Skip irritating towels
We recommend this Epsom salt with essential oils that further calm the area and heal the sores faster.

4. Topical Solutions After Peeing

  • Apply Rescue Balm after bathing/peeing to soothe raw skin
  • Look for:
    • Zinc oxide (skin protectant)
    • Lidocaine (numbing agent)
    • Aloe vera (cooling relief)

5. OTC Pain Management

  • Phenazopyridine (Azo) – Eases urinary pain (turns urine orange; temporary use only)
  • Ibuprofen – Reduces overall inflammation

When to Seek Medical Help

Consult a doctor if you experience:
⚠️ Pain lasting >1 week after sores heal
⚠️ Blood in urine
⚠️ Fever/chills (possible secondary infection)

Preventing Future Discomfort

  • Start antivirals at first tingles – Can minimize outbreak severity
  • Wear loose cotton underwear – Reduces friction/moisture
  • Use fragrance-free soap – Avoids further irritation. Best to use is Reviver Soap.
